My guess would be nothing, but if you really want an expert opinion, PM Springer.  Or maybe he'll see this post.  I think he spends most of his time on another forum.

Having no expertise what so ever on this subject; I suspect and agree with Mike there probably were no changes made to the engine internally or externally. Other than a change from the 4-speed tranny to the 5-speed back in the early years; I know of nothing and even the tranny change in my mind is questionable as I would have to go back and check the topic of "FXR HISTORY" authored so wonderfully by Fxr2evo99 (Tim) on the FXR Discussion Board...But I'm going to keep lookin George cause you have peeked my curiosity...Semper Fi My Friend!

The FXR never had a 4-speed in it Blaine. Over the years, just like TC EPA motors, the Evo went thru minor changes and had various cams in em. Early Evo's had shovelhead flywheels in em in '84 and '85, possibly '86. Improvement to the cases were made because cylinder studs were pulling on the early ones. There were also carb mods made. Later ones could only have idle adjusted, not mixture, unless you drilled uout the plug sealing off the mixture screw. The early ones also breathed thru the case bottom, not thru the heads like the later ones.  But they were all inherently the same in the later years. I tend to doubt you'll find anything different between '94 and '95, except maybe cam profiles or carb mods. The CA models use different cams than 49 state models. ;)

Okay--I looked it up in one of my books

I'm paraphrasing here due to time constraints:

1994: revision of the primary ratio to improve starting.  Also new cylinder studs and base gaskets

1995: (Dyna models now) got new stiffer inner primary.

1996:  Stronger, quieter high contact ratio gears.

So studs/base gaskets were different in Evos (again, and they sill leaked/seeped! ;D). The rest were differences in other areas of the bike. ;)

That's what I thought but wasn't sure. So it's pretty well established other than minor changes in carb, gaskets, primary strength; it's pretty much the same animal from the beginning...Thanks Howie  :2vrolijk_21:

It had a major transmission change from the original 5-speeds, but they were 5-speeds from the beginning. Also major starter and clutch changes too from the early ones, but this was early. Wouldn't affect the mid '90's bikes at all. ;)

They must have changed the paint or something, the black on my 96 Wide Glide still looks good and I have seen many 94 and 95's where the black has chipped away.

What is the difference between a 94' 95' EVO?
Does anyone know what the final upgrade change that Harley did to the Evo?

To perhaps add to this discussion I became curious indeed about how the EVO Engines [as well as some other related parts] were modified from the last of the production EVO engines [and related parts] for the 1994 FXR's  into the 1999 version of the EVO engine which was placed into the eventual 1999 FXR2's, 1999 FXR3's, and fnally the 2000 FXR4's.  Only just a couple of items were/are specific to the FXR , thus I expanded the search a bit.....

George, according to my FXR2 part's manual the following changes occurred:

1)  Front Cylinder Head with w/guides & seats
16692-95 something was done to the front cylinder head requiring a part number change.
the rear cylinder part number is listed as 16696-92A so no change to this.

2) It appears there were some changes to the carburetor in 1996:
     27492-96 Carburetor
     27253-96 Jet Needle
     27115-98 Main Jet, 1.70mm
     27353-96 Carburetor Top Chrome
     27231-98 Collar
     27263-96 Collar

3) Alternator & Regulator
     70041-95 Regulator Ground Cable

4)  Starter Motor
     31521-98 Starter Yoke Assembly
     31538-98  Switch Assembly

5)  Gear Shifter
     33320-98 Shifter Cam

6)  Transmission
      33024-99 Transmission  (C& BW)
      33902-98 Neutral Indicator W/o-ring Switch
      34468-98 Upper Cover Chrome
      35087-99 Bearing (2) Retaining Ring
      35653-98 Bearing Housing Gasket

7)  Transmisson Gears
Much of the gearing was updated in 1994

8 )  Clutch
37707-98A Clutch Shell Basket 36 Tooth
     37550-98   Clutch Hub
Much of the inners of the clutch basic go to 1998 as well.
It should be noted that this inner primary set up is the same as in a 2002 Road King/Classic or essentially your 2002 touring models.

9)  Primary Housing
     60668-99 Clutch Cover chrome
     25416-99 Clutch Cover O~Ring
     60665-99 Primary Chrome Cover Assembly

10)  Belt Chain & Sprockets
Simply interesting to note that the 25 Toot Compensating Sprocket, 32 Tooth Transmission Sprocket and the 65 Tooth Rear Wheel Sprocket were created as part numbers in 1994:
40308-94   25T Compensating Sprocket
40250-94A 32 Tooth Transmission Sprocket
40311-94   65 Tooth Rear Wheel Sprocket

However it should be noted here.....at least for us FXR owners....that while the above parts were of course new that HD acutally used a 25 Tooth Compensating Sprocket, 36 Tooth Clutch Shell Basket & Ring Gear, a 32 Tooth Transmission Pulley and finally a 70 Tooth Rear Wheel Sprocket giving the two models of the FXR in 1994 a final gearing of 3.15.

Then In 1999 for the FXR2's FXR3's and FXR4's for the FXR owners HD used a 25 Tooth Compensating Sprocket, 36 Tooth Clutch Shell Basket & Ring Gear, a 32 Tooth Transmission Pulley and finally a 65 Tooth Rear Wheel Sprocket  giving the FXR2's  FXR3's  FXR4's a final gearing of 2.925  The Secondary Belt size is 133T

11)  Front Fort
     45941-95  Fork Springs (2)
     45272-98  Left Slider Chrome
     45276-98  Right Slider Chrome

12)  Frame
       47205-91A   Frame
some sort of frame change occurred in 1991.
+ and which appears to be the very last frame change for the FXR all the way through the FXR2's, FXR3's &
              FXR4's.

13)  Oil Tank
       62414-99 Oil Tank (black)

14)  Oil Filter & Mount
       26352-95A  Oil Filter Adaptor

Regards,

Tim

HeHe! Yeah George, but what does it all really mean to the average Joe? Running changes for everything HD does are always being made. But the overall model package is virtually unchanged until they make a major model change. When they need to improve something within an existing platform, the P/N is usually followed by the a letter suffix at the end of the P/N. When they change a major cpmponent or come out with a new platform, they usually give it a new P/N. But the interchangability is there until a design change to the bike or platform itself is made. So I wouldn't worry about these subtle differences in P/N's. They basically have no impact on you. ;)

Hoist~~~~"........Yeah George, but what does it all really mean to the average Joe?......"   "........So I wouldn't worry about these subtle differences in P/N's. They basically have no impact on you......."

Hoist~~~ well for one thing most that come here aren't "average" lol they have spent a lot of money on their bikes.....so that's not the average buyer.....although most of us FXR2, FXR3, and FXR4 owners aren't even close to what you touring bike owners spend to own a CVO bike.

Why would you state that the p/n's have no impact on George....isn't that stating sort of the "obvious" [not trying to be mean at all or stupid...lol] I mean his bike is a 1999 of course none of the above changes affect him, the point I was making with the above information is that yes there were changes from 1994 through 1999 and 1999 is the year of George's bike just as it is for anyone coming here as a CVO owner except of course for the 2000 FXR4....and I believe there were no changes for 2000 thus George would not be missing anything from the evo engine as an improvement and thus have no impact on him.  <~~~this sounds bad doesn't it, I don't mean it to sound as rude as it sounds lol...   :nixweiss:

However, I didn't ask why George was interested in the question to begin with, this is true........so I sort of went off on my own tangent....lol.....but actually I have been interested in learning about the differences that were done to the evo engine from 1994 for the last FXR production bike until 1999 when the FXR CVO bikes were built.....so in part I was addressing a generic question of George's and I was also attempting to highlight the changes from 1994 through 1999 for the power plant that is in our bike as well as any other main differences......

And I still believe....although I may be a singular voice here that it's interesting to note the changes in the gearing between the 1994 FXR's and the CVO FXR's.  There was even different gearing in the 1993 FXR's that was still a third choice they featured 3.37 final gearing......which is significantly lower gearing for such a lite bike....

To the reverse of this point....there is enough supporting evidence that would indeed support that Harley does not always make "positive" improvements each year to their bikes...as an example to this end, there are many that would state that the best year for a twin cam and for a touring bike with a twin cam might actually be 2002.  There are a lot of years between 2002 and 2009.  So my interest was to in a way understand if anything that was indeed done to the "power plant" [if anything] was a positive or a negative to the evo performance with what we have in our "CVO" FXR's and of course as CVO owners we FXR owners are the only one concerned with this information.

I fully realize however your point...and everything you said above is also quite accurate of course.....if there is a major change often times part numbers get completely changed.....but given the "simplicity" of the EVO and that it had already been produced for 10 years by 1994 the likely hood that HD was going to spend huge amounts of money to redesign the evo with "major" changes would be unlikely and for the most part the above information confirms that as well.....
Ok I am     :beatdeadhorse:   this to death....LOL

and I am   :hanged: myself here too....lol

Taking a deep breath.......

 :pepper:

Tim

Hey Tim, Hoist, Thanks for the info. Let me ask another. The higher the gear ratio, ie. (car terms) 411:1 rear end means the axle turns 4.11 times to one revolution of the engine. So I guess its the same on a bike right? I don't know what the final ratio for 5th gear is but  is it higher(411:1) or lower( 391:1) ratio? for the '99 than the '93/'94. Thanks.

And Guys. Calm down, I think we are all friends here and we should all bounce ideas, thoughts and experiences off each other. Lets be gentleman. This is not a race.......................If you don't mind me saying this. Lets all help each other. We could all learn and teach. This should not be a competition, but it should be a compassion for our bikes. We should and could help each other here. I'm Glad I found this site and all the guys here. I feel like it's "home". "Peace my brothers" or "Sex, Drugs and  Rock and Roll", lol  ;D :)

Thanks, George
