Replacing Bolts
« on: January 16, 2007, 12:07:51 PM »

I want to "bling" the new bike up a bit with some polished stainless hardware.

Can I replace case bolts, and other critical fasteners one at a time?

See this thread:

As far as the replacement procedure I would do them one at a time and torque each to spec as you go.

The thread mentioned above suggests what you might replace them with.  For the particular question though; yeah, sure.  It's no problem at all to replace whatever you happen to have in your hand at the moment and then grab more when you have a reason to have them apart.

Jim & Don,

With your blessing of the onsey, twosey method, I'll go ahead and get case bolts as well.

Thanks,

Chief

Just remember Chief.  Sometimes our hearts may tell us we might be up for two at a time.  But stamina and reality dictate that one is just all we can handle!

Don,
You are right. Two at a time does sound like a good thing, but the end result is always more satisfying for all parties with one at a time. ::)

Some of the bolts are a pain to get to try Hot Toppers ,I once was questioned by a service manager about who installed mine after  a primary leak ....

Chief although not mentioned as of yet but for everyone you replace make sure you use BLUE loctite on them. Also you will need a very good TQ wrench. If you have the cash one for inch pounds and one for foot pounds.

They are not all so easy to get to but man it will make a difference in the look of the bike.

DAWG,

Thanks for the tip. I'm set up with all the tools and the goo. I'm just lacking in the knowledge of which bolts I can get out without major disassembly. With the price of some of these bolts, especially the case bolts, I don't want to buy them if I can't use them.

Here's a specific question. Is it possible to replace the four bolts between the tranny and engine case without breaking the two pieces apart? I guess it depends on how long the bolts are, but with the limited space, I'm thinking there just isn't enough space to swap those out.

I'm thinking I'll need some Hot Toppers for those.
