How necessary is a dyno tune with new cams?
« on: August 25, 2015, 10:43:02 AM »

I have a SE super tuner and plan on upgrading the cams. How necessary is a dyno tune once the job is done?

By "upgrading, " I assume that you intend to install new cams to gain more power. This generally entails higher lift, longer duration and / or more overlap. If so, the new cam gives your engine the ability to make more power.  It will not, however until you retune it. Thus, a retune is absolutely necessary.  If you want it to run right.

It is an absolute requirement (unless you are installing the same cams)

You mention you have a SE Supertuner but do you understand it takes a dyno to use this to tune the bike? Any work or added parts that affect fuel/air intake or exhaust is normally corrected with a updated tune (program) that is generated on a dyno, so yes changing cams would fall into this situation.

The bike will definitely need to be re-tuned.
If you know what you're doing , you can tune it yourself by using the smart tune process with an appropriate calibration
That is you dont need the dyno
If you don't know what you're doing (and that seems to be the case ) you need to learn
Otherwise  you need to get a dyno tune from a good tuner
(and that may not be the dealer who wants to do the work)
A professional dyno tuner will still beat a DIY tune hands down
