Defender BrakeLok
« on: November 29, 2007, 07:20:19 PM »

Was looking at Bagger magazine and saw this from Jaybrake: http://jbrake.com/whatsnew_pages/defender_install.htm
Anybody tried this? Install is pretty easy. Jaybrake says it should work with my brembo brakes. Just wondering if this is an improvement (for $200 anyway) over standard disc lock? john

John, Hawg Halters has this lock mechanism designed directly in to a caliper casting.  I've been using it for awhile now.

Honestly I'd never screwed with a disc lock before; ever.  Was just more extra steps and hassle then I'd contend with.  This I've actually used a few times though.  It's simple.  Keeps the look of the bike clean and it's as effective as any disc lock is going to be.

don,
that was my impression about effectiveness. The BrakeLok does come in three configuartion ( one similar to the integrated system with the caliper like you have) : http://roadlok.com/index-one.htm
Folks have been pretty helpful on information about fitment with different calipers and rotors. Looks like a good engineering idea, but you know that sometimes what looks good doesn't work work a cr*p! john

John, it does work.  Simply and effectively (which are what you need to force yourself in to the habit of using such a device).

The only problem I had was shared by at least two others.  The ostensibly "universal" fit for that line of holes around the rotor wasn't as universal as they'd like you to believe.

I had to mess around for bit working a series of the holes in the rotor just a bit to get them to accept the pin.  The tolerance is surprisingly close.  I remember at least one other person who couldn't get the pin to engage in the rotor and was able to solve simply be loosening the caliper again and taking advantage of every little big of wiggle/tolerance/slop in the attachment.

Apparently those three of us were the exception rather than the rule.  Don't get me wrong, in the end it wasn't a big deal.  It was just more of a "deal" then the mftr would let you believe.

Here is a thread discussion and illustrationg the alignment problem.  This was with the RoadLok as cast together with a caliper; not with the auxiliary mount you're considering.  Might never present itself with your mount.  But forewarned is forearmed.

thanks don,
As ham fisted and mechanically non inclined as I am, even the simplest things can present a challenge. but more than like will bite the bullet, and if I was to guess with the auxillary clamp and caliper probably is even more wiggle room on alignment. but your infor is actually why I posted the question? john

Was thinking the same thing John.  That mount on a mount system would give you even a bit more flexibility.  The lok setup is nice.  I think you'll like it.

Interesting idea to see this as an intermediate mount setup to work with any caliper now.  What does the lok package by itself sell for.  Assuming they've not priced it at some Harley-esque price point this might be an easy little accessry addition with lots of market.

the defender comes in four finishes: satin, polished, black, and chrome. 1st three:$199, chrome $229. Not horrible, but considering that its added insurance for theft of $40K bike, maybe small price to pay, john

With the satin and the polished you could hone the unthreaded pair of mount holes a tiny bit if need be to gain that wiggle room also.  Would show up terribly on black and wouldn't want to bust the surface of the chrome.  But would be an option on the other two.
