Deustch Crimping tool...
« on: May 17, 2011, 11:24:34 AM »

oy... mother... Going through the effort of hardwiring my GPS to be controlled off the Acc Switch.

I picked up the Y adapter harness for the Acc Plug under the seat.  I also ordered an additional male plug to "do it right".

Now I am seeing you need the $249 crimping tool from Deutch in order to really do it right and utilize the plugs.

Anyone have any experience with these tools... can it be "mickeyed" with another tool or can I solder the pins on?

I have a feeling I am going end up just cutting #3 and #4 wires (Black and orange) off one of the female plugs on the Y adapter and just soldering and heat shrinking them.

You've got options Mal.  First thing, however, is to recognize the type of terminals you have.  Deutsch housings might have either "open barrel" or "closed barrel" terminals.

The "barrel" is the end where the wire inserts in the terminal.  Open barrel is the the type with the "wings" that are spread open to begin with and must be crimped down to complete the terminal.  Closed barrel is a closed round end that the stripped wire slide in to before the barrel is crimped closed.

If you've got closed barrel terminals look for a Paladin 1461 crimping tool.  In the $40 range unless you find a big bargain.

If you've got closed barrel terminals you'll likely end up getting a crimping "frame" (the pliers) and a die that inserts in the frame to match the terminals.  These are handy because you can use the frame with various dies to do many different types of crimps.

An inexpensive frame I like is the Paladin 8000.  Also probably in the $40-45 range.  Then look for a Paladin 2033 die which is for non-insulated open barrel connectors.  That's probably $20-25.  Sometimes you can find the frame and die bundled together at a discount.

Whoa... Good info TL... you just saved me a couple of Benjamins!

You're on my list!  (people I will enjoy a frosty beverage with before I meet my maker!)

Mal

Wait... as I was re-reading your post... closed barrel terminals use a Paladin 1461 crimping tool. And OPEN Barrel terminals use a frame and die... correct?

(you have closed barrel for both types in your post above)

Good info on the inexpensive crimper's Don. Not wanting to spend the $$ on the expensive ones, I crudely ground down and filed some pliers to make my own. They worked about 80% of the time or until Jim saw my handywork  :o

If you have the closed barrel pins you can also solder those on quite effectively there is even a helpful little hole in the barrel to push a fine iron tip into...any problems pvt me

I always crimp with needle nose and solder, too cheap to buy the high priced tools.
