OK - Need some help...
« on: May 25, 2008, 09:08:00 PM »

How the hell do I get the cap off without trashing it?   :help:

Tried a pair of needle nose vice grips with a cloth to prevent gouging it...no dice
Tried a small flathead under the edge...no dice

Do I have to trash it to get it off?   :nixweiss:

Have an EZ-Brake and Shifter in bound (this site is leading to my financial ruin).  :bigcry:

Florida marine,

No you should not have to trash, look around on the other side you should find a small allen head set screw. just match it up with the proper size allen head undo it and it will come right off.

Read your post and went out and checked...smooth all around.  SO, I took a plastic mallet I use to separate AL parts on my KLR and gave it a light tap.  The inside one came off when I slipped a jewelers flat head under a small seam that the mallet created.  Turns out it is a thin metal cap with a dab of silicone holding it on?  Trashed the outside one since it was trapped under the other shifter.

Managed to save the inside one, and I only need one since I wanted to take the heel shifter off to fit my size 13!

Thanks, got me off the recliner at least!

Those caps are just slip ons.. they should just pull off.

Did you try gloves with rubber fingers?

Don't feel so bad... the stuff I ruin is frequently a lot more costly than a cap!!!  :nervous:

Looks like a cheap Hot Topper will replace, so do whatever it takes to remove.

When a bike come into the shop with those on it I tell the customer that they will most likely need to be replaced as getting them off without messing them up is sometimes impossible....damn I hate them things......Just buy chrome or polished stainless bolts and be done with it!

I know what you mean.  I ruined a double order of chicken wings and a 12 pack last night.
