Cat,s out of the pipe...now what?
« on: April 27, 2009, 11:25:31 AM »

Well I put on 4 miles after I bought my 09 CVO FAT BOB and had to go home because of the rain >:(. It rained all weekend and is going to rain again today, but anyway I was bored Saterday afternoon and after a few bud soda's I popped off the exhaust and cut the Cat out and rewelded and painted the pipe black with high temp paint. Put it back together on Sunday and it sounds way better. Its an 8 beer job for anyone who is wondering how long it takes. What do you guys think, should I run it as is or do I have to richen it up some?
Sorry no pictures yet.

You're in WI.  I thought cats were only in CA bikes.

All CVO Touring models have cats, regardless of state or country.

GM,  There are certainly far more knowledgeable opinions here but the closed loop system will probably compensate for the cat removal if that's all you've done.  Probably should not run it too hard.  If you get popping on deceleration... you're too lean.  Decide what else you want to do (pipes, a/c) and then richen either with a fuel pak or tuner....

just for grinzies I think I am going to weld a bung in the pipe to accept my A/F gauge that I use for snowmobiles. its a wideband innovate. Should have done it when the pipe was out.

The pipe goes from 2 into 1 then into 2 again. Its in the 1 part (cross over) between header and mufflers. You wont be able to drill it out with a core bit because the pipe has a slight bend from the rear. The pipe has to be cut in the middle to get the cat out with an air chisel or by hand. Or like I did, cut the pipe next to the existing weld on each end and clean out the cat material and reweld so it looks like nothing was done. Bike has a better sound now but I will give it a thousand miles to see if I like it or not.

an alternative to Gutterman's solution is to buy the headpipe assembly for a non-cvo bike and install it in the place of the original. Costs a little more but no cutting or welding and you have your original pipe as a backup in case they start doing emission testing of motorcycles where you live.

I figure seeing we do not test car emissions yet, it will be a long long time before they test bikes.

I figured cutting and welding was 150 or more less expensive than a 96 in head pipe from a non CA bike.  Take off's in my area are hard to find becuase the 96 in non cat head pipe is a good one.

And they will not go backwards with it. it will start from that year and go forward.
Only issue would be, scenario, you cut the pipe, remove the cat, weld it back, enjoy life, move to Californication, fail inspection. I see the one thing that make this fool proof. Don't move, done.
