rake on trike
« on: May 09, 2010, 02:01:39 PM »

Hi, I have a 2008 screamin eagle trike and I am thinking about adding rake to the front end to provide easier steering (ez steer).  Champion has a 5% rake, Lehman has 3% DFI has 4%. any advice would be helpful on which is better.  I have heard that the higher the rake the more touchy the ride. Thanks

The rake isn't necessarilly what will cause a weird or bad handling ride. It is the trail. Any of the quality kits should be set-up to be within limits of trail. If set-up properly you'll be fine. If you do a google search on rake and trail you'll find plenty of info on how it works and the affects on handling.  Good Luck

Rake, trail and center of gravity and suspension all play an important roll in trike handling.  Pros and cons for all of them.

By the way..... what, exactly, is a Screamin Eagle trike?  I didn't know the MoCo had made one :nixweiss:

No such thing as a HD factory made Screamin Eagle trike.
I would guess he has had his 08 SE triked.

Thanks bubblehead and JVC, I have researched the net thru google and there is a lot of information but nothing to say what the best rake is or the pros and cons of a higher rake ie 3% vs 5%.

My trike is a 08 SE that was triked with a Lehman kit.  Lehman has a 3% rake, champion has 5%.  If you guys know anyone that has experience with either that would be great.

I used the AME kit on my fatty. It corrects trail. They now have a trike rake kit now. I LOVE mine it rides great.

My Motor Trike has 5* rake and is simply a dream to steer. You won't be able to get much more than 5* unless you are willing to extend your forks. My trike is not touchy at all. I've ridden no rake and 3* as well.. not that much difference in the 3 to 5 if any at all.

Dave Bickford (Ultraboy) wrote an article about using the new Tri Glide trees that would save you about half the expense of purchasing an EZ Steer Kit.

Here is the link ->>  http://www.triketalk.com/forum/ultraboy/1407-harley-raked-triple-trees-alternate-approach.html

There is a SE Conversion Motor Trike running around North Atlanta...  08 colors. Looks pretty nice. I was checking it out before the owner picked it up.

this is my Baby with 5* rake... notice the front fender tilts up a bit with 5*. Not as bad with 3*.

My wife had a 2003 Road King that had a Lehman Conversion with the 3% kick out....road well....like power steering.  She currently has a 2009 Tri Glide Ultra Classis by HD....don't know what the kick out is, but it rides very good.

Thanks for the info guys, and for the photo showing the tip up, I was wondering what effect the raking would have, not that bad or noticable.

According to the specs listed on H-D's web site:

Standard FLH - Rake 26°, Trail 6.69"

Factory Trike - Rake 26°, Trail 3.94"

Of course, I wouldn't swear to the accuracy of those numbers, since they've had some errors on their spec pages in the past.
