Battery terminal stripped!!
« on: August 03, 2011, 09:40:12 AM »

Anyone know of a cure for a stripped battery terminal? It gets snug, but won't get tight enough to stay connected for long.

You might try going to an auto parts store and look at some battery terminal spacers. They'll take up the slack by providing a larger area for the clamp. Other then that sounds like you might want to change the cable. :nixweiss:

Are you talking side terminal and the hole in the battery is stripped?

I've got a lawn mower battery that's been in service two years after a bolt hole went bad.  It had gotten loose and I didn't know it until it's own vibration had worn the hole out enough the bolt wouldn't pull tight.

Don't remember what size the replacement bolt was but hit the hardware store for a slightly larger self cutting bolt.  It cut threads and has worked on the mower just fine.  One qualifier to keep in mind if you have any doubt about the connection you'll be creating this way; if the lawnmower craps out I don't have very far to walk back to the beer fridge.

Never did that in a battery either.  First thought was to wonder if the hole is deep enough?  But it probably is.  Those are pretty flat taps.

WHAT??? Your lawnmower doesn't have a cup holder? Mine does, and holds my Rolling Rock perfectly, in fact, mine has an ice cooler big enough to hold six Rolling Rocks... Just enough to get the job done  :2vrolijk_21:

Alas, only a cup holder.  Though before now hadn't considered fab'ing up a cooler to mount on the rear pin.

Truth is, and I know it makes me less of a man to admit this, I wouldn't use the cooler.  Yard is only about 2 1/2 acres but when I get started I get in the zone.  The yard zone.  Every little blade of grass becomes the enemy and all I want to do is kill, kill, kill.  Right there on the Group W lawn mower seat; kill, kill, kill.  And I don't want to get off the seat until they're all dead.  I don't even dismount to move the niece's 14 foot trampoline.  Just reach back, grab hold, drive on with the mower and keep cutting the whole time.  KILL, KILL, KILL all those little green devils!

Yeah, the hold in the battery is stripped. The screw goes in, but won't tighten up before it strips and loosens up again. Sounds like a larger screw would do the trick.

Take the old screw with you to a good hardware store.  Tell the clerk you want something just a little bit bigger that is self-cutting.
