Question on primary capacity, 2003 SERK
« on: March 01, 2012, 03:49:44 PM »

I have a new-to-me 2003 SERK, stock 103" motor.....

Changing all 3 fluids today and ran into a question on the primary.....I drained the primary and refilled with 32oz per the book but I cannot see the fluid at all in the bottom thru the clutch inspection cover....Is the rec procedure to fill it until you can see the fluid or is 32 oz enough??

I have owned other twin cams and never run into 32oz not being enough..Usually it was always too much......

Thanks...

Did you take off the Deby Cover or the small 4 bolt Primary tensioner Adjustment plate.
One quart in my 03 SERK is pretty much level with the bottom of that inspection opening, when on the side stand.

What are you using for Fluids?
I use
Amsoil 20-50 in Crankcase
Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-100 in Transmission
Amsoil 10w - 40 in primary Case.

I have the bike stright up on a stand and adding/looking thru the round clutch insp cover.....In the past on other HD's the primary always took a little less than 32oz to be right at the lip of the round cover......

I will get another  qt of primary oil and add another few oz's and see......just have not run into this before.....The Owners Manual says to add it to the bottom of the lip and the Service Manual says to just add 32 oz...(maybe the other way around).....

I have always chg'd all 3 fluids at 2500 miles and at this interval have always used HD dino oil and HD trans/primary fluids......(Last 08 Ultra ran perfect at almost 50K and 2 trips to Fairbanks from San Diego....It was in better shape than I was..)....

Actually, I believe it says add until the oil just touches the bottom edge of the clutch spring with the bike level, not the lip of the opening. :confused5:  If you drain the oil as completely as possible without disassembly, 32 ounces is usually pretty close.  But there are always minor differences from bike to bike, especially with Harley.  If it's only off an ounce or two it isn't going to hurt anything, but on the first change on a "new to you" bike I'd suggest adding until you reach the bottom edge of the clutch spring and note exactly how much it took.  Of course, it also makes a big difference if the bike isn't truly level while you're doing this, both side to side and fore and aft.

I just checked mu 2003 FLHRSEI2 Owners Manual

Pg 18
Capacities
Primary Chain case - 32oz approx
Transmission - 24 oz
Oil Tank w/Filter - 4.0 qts

Both Local HD Dealers recommed SE Syn3 for all three locations.

Pg111
Pour the proper amount, 32 oz (946 ml0, and type of primary chaincase lubricant in through the clutch inspection cover opening.
With the vehicle standing upright, the level of the lubricant must be visible in the bottom of the chain case.

I simply find it easier to open the Primary Chain adjustment cover, 4 bolts. Very easy to see the fluid in the bottom of case and less bolts to remove and apply.
Also get to inspect the Primary Chain tensioner for proper adjustment.
If I want to inspect clutch, I open the drby cover.

My neighbor's 09 FLHR's Primary case, with the automatic Chain tensioner and No Tensioner Insp Plate, takes 1 Qt and 6oz to fill it.

On an '03 I can guarantee you that simply putting in the quart will be fine.

Agreed
Every time I have opened up the Tensioner Insp plate, the lower half of the primary chain is in Oil.

I bought one new and have always just poured a quart in it.  Never even looked to see where it was.  It's been fine and I've got right at 60,000 on it now, so I wouldn't worry about it.
