Picking up a new 2012 crimson red this week. Wondering how good is the wind protection?

hard to say, it is all relative to how and what you have ridden before.  I have ridden old school bikes, choppers, road glides and now a ConV, and I find it the perfect balance between weight and road comfort.  The question you ask is something that you should have figured out on your test ride.  That said, I LOVE the new red color on your 2012 bike; if it didn't cost me an arm and a leg I would trade my 2011 in for one.  Own the road, eat the wind brother.....

The dealer did not have one for me to test drive. I assumed it would be like a 2003 fat boy with a windshield I had.

I think you will find it very different that that ride, different good in my opinion, but different.   Let us know what you think after you are able to get a few hundred miles on her.

The shield is good. It's not whisper quiet but cuts most of the wind for my 5'10" frame. I will say that the fairing is heavy for its usefulness. If you don't use the speakers or NAV it's not a good use of that weight burden. I may consider a second detachable shield without all the added bulk.

I sold my 2003 Fat Boy when I go the 2011 convertible last fall.  I was disappointed in the wind buffeting compared to the Fat Boy with a windshield, it was much more than I expected.  I was going to order an aftermaket windshield but then the windshield was changed on the 2012 convertible and they added some wind deflectors.  I added those parts over the winter and am finally riding some now and the modifications were great. You get an added bonus of some wind on your chest that wasn't there with the Fat Boy.  I still have a full windshield with the anniversary emblem and may put it on for a comparison the next time I have the fairing off.
