UPDATED: Heated Grips Odd Question
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:09:04 PM »

I hardly use my heated grips, tried a few times, sometimes worked, sometimes did not. Anyway have the bike at Chesters in Phoenix for a heated seat problem and front end vibration when front brake applied.
Service writer phone and tells me the heated grips work fine, and asked if I had the the accessory switch (same as cruise) I told i I was not aware that switch had to be on. I don't have my owners manual with me to check. Never heard of this before.

Also on the left heated grip where the rotary switch s, there seems some sort of plasticized media has leaked out in the heat and solidified around the switch part of the heated grip. Is this some sort of insulation?

Thanks,

I don't need to have my accessory switch on for my heated grips to work on my 12 SEUC.

On our bikes you do not have to have the accessory switch on for the heated seat to work.

Regarding the switch on the handlebar, doesn't sound like that is right-something wrong.

My CVO Road Glide does not need any switches on either.

IF the seat is plugged in to the correct connector, you do not have to turn on the ACC switch.  Refer him to the shop manual and wiring diagrams.

If the stuff that's supposed to be inside the switch for the grips has oozed out, that isn't right either.  It's not normal for anything to ooze out of any switch, even one from Harley.

Exactly.  There are two identical power connectors under the seat; one is always on, while the other is controlled by the ACC switch.  Many techs (like one in particular at my local dealer!) can't wrap their heads around this, and keep plugging the seat into the ACC plug--so you have to turn on the ACC switch AND the seat heat switch.  Plug the seat into the always-on, then only the seat switch is needed.  Save the ACC plug for an accessory that you want to control from the fairing.

Unless something is seriously F'd, the ACC switch has nothing to do with the grips.

As others have stated, there's two plugs located in the same area...if the tech doesn't know this, you might want to inform him...

There is an insert on the left grip that sticks into the handlebar...it looks like a small dild...I'm pretty sure it houses the rheostat...it appears to be some kind of silicone based material.  If that stuff is "oozing out", I'd say your grips are hosed, even if they work now.  They eventually won't...

That applies whether anything is leaking out or not.

For the seat, the plug on my 08 non-CVO was wired backwards.  When I plugged the heated seat in, I got a "Buss Error" message on the odometer.  Switched around the wires on the seat, worked fine for 2 years.  Sold the seat to my buddy when I got the SEUC.  He had same issue, put the plug back the way it was, problem fixed.

Just received a call from the HD Dealer, they spoke with ESP and they will be supplying new heated grips and seat, have ordered new seat, shoul be in within a week and will order heated grips,

In regards to the front end vibration they found the neck bearings not tightened properly.

So far all is good.
