Aerial issue, help
« on: July 08, 2013, 01:26:06 PM »

hi,
I have a CVO 2009 Ultra Classic, I decided to put new aerials on, mainly for my CB, the new aerials are heavier, when I returned
home, just 60 miles one of the aerials snapped off, it wasn't the aerial but one of the upright screws on the tourpak, has anyone had an issue like this, I know the aerials are heavier, could it have been just metal fatigue on the one screw or is there some sort of brace that I should also put on the back, thanks for any help

I have tried all kinds of different antennas over the years and never had the stud break-off.

Curious if the new antenna was longer too in addition to being heavier, the more weight might not be that big an issue but if it is acting over a longer length you are talking about a lot more shear on that stud.

Might just have been a bad stud, hope that was the case, but the stud breaking may also be protecting the tour-pak from too much force.  There needs to be a weak link in that chain somewhere.

The '09 came with the same antenna bases that they've used since 1986, and to the best of my knowledge there hasn't been a widespread problem with the studs breaking.  Over most of those years the factory antennas were the long whips, not the shorter versions common now, so I'd imagine that antenna base should be able to stand up to most any antenna actually designed for use on a Harley.  Perhaps you just got one with a flaw that finally failed.

Anyhow, buy another one and see what happens.  The P/N is 76252-86, approximately $10 MSRP.
