2012 engine in a 2013 SERK
« on: February 05, 2014, 04:23:07 PM »

List,

I have posted here before and there are some threads on how I ended up with a 2013 SERK that has a 2012 engine in it so I won't elaborate. As I read the posts here (for which I am most grateful) I am starting to understand that there are some improvements on the 2012 engines for 2013. My question:

Since I can not replace the current engine (and yes, it is black, read the other posts) what in particular should I be focusing on to improve the 2012 plant? I have seen many comments about 2012 over 2013 and I don't want to overlook something important!

As always, thanks for your knowledge and input!

The main difference on the CVO110 from 2012 to 2013 was the change to the SE lifters, p/n 18572-13, and the change to a full complement inner cam bearing (commonly referred to as Timken).  The lifters have a higher capacity bearing for the roller, and the previous lifters have a history of premature roller failures which can destroy an engine.  Since you don't have the engine that came with the bike, there is no warranty so you will definitely want to consider replacing the stock 2012 lifters, either with the new SE part or with a good aftermarket lifter.  It's cheap insurance.  As for the inner cam bearings, I don't remember from your previous thread if the cams were already changed by the previous owner or not.  Most people tend to change the inner cam bearings to the higher capacity and quality Timkens when they do a cam change, so if the previous owner changed the cams you may already have better cam bearings. :nixweiss:

Thanks grc!

I know the previous owner had the HD dealer in Paducah KY install T-Man 625 cams. They are not aware of any other mods since the owner lives in MO. I tried to get service orders to see if any work had been done back in '12 but they didn't have anything. I have already decided to install S&S lifters & pushrods this spring just as insurance.

As for upgraded cam bearings, I guess I'm rolling the dice here!

Thanks!
