New Motor
« on: November 29, 2014, 10:41:32 AM »

Yesterday was a great day, sunny and 83 degrees, nice day out on the bike, right up until I tore the bottom end out of the motor. Must have killed the bearings and crank pin. I'm looking for a new motor (I was going to redo the top end anyway) but since this happened I figured why not upgrade all around. I'm thinking Jims 120 or 131. Anyone have any ideas or feedback??

I would avoid anything JIMS like the plague except for their tools. Their customer support and product support for that matter are less than stellar and there are some hanous stories about them leaving their customers hanging out to dry. In fact I just saw a crank of theirs with a twisted off output shaft that was a pump gas, naturally aspirated motor and JIMS said it failed because the engine was making too much power. S&S on the other hand makes great stuff and they warranty their T124 crate motors. They're very hard to beat, they have a warranty and they're now available in the gray color to match the stock CVO gray color if that's a concern for you. We've done several of their T124's without issue and we've got more coming right now.

Another option that I probably wouldn't hesitate to use is R&R.

I've had a Titan with an S&S 112" motor since 2003. It's a monster!  The mechanicals of the motor are very quiet.  Has always started on the first try even after sitting for months.  No issues.   :2vrolijk_21:

I'll second the S&S 124!! I installed mine in 07, now at 65K (klms), runs strong and fast still.
Mines carbed,IST Ignition, came with 2 yr warranty. Never used, just ride. fwiw twinotter

A tear down is in order before jumping to conclusions. Need to see what if any can be saved. There's nothing wrong with rebuilding yours into a 113 or 124 depending on what can be reused and your budget

Not to discredit Don or Kirby as both have been around the block a time or ten but it's hard to ignore the warranty that comes with a new crate motor from S&S and you can always either sell what you have leftover to offset cost or you can build it for another bike. We are moving the S&S motors quite a bit because of this train of thought, because we've had great results with them and because of the very competitive price point. No sales pitch needed. It is what it is.

If a 110 goes into the dumper, what is one looking at price wise for a direct bolt up S&S124 ready to ride?

Or go to Hillside for a 117 or 124 upgrade , I'd stay away from S.E. 120 or as said before any Jims engine.
And ride past the EX'S on back tire laughing and showing them they are # 1!  Heh heh heh

Sorry to hear Beags. I have a Jim's 131 and I would not do it again. Failed the first year at 8k. They rebuilt it and now at about 15k now. I don't know if they all are like mine but quite a bit of metallic noise but it was the same before and I am running HD B lifters and they are at least quieter than the Jim's lifters. At least this time it feels like a more solid motor than before we will see how long it lasts. Whatever you do I hope you end up with a happy motor in the end.
