Heated Gloves or Grips for 2013 CVO RG
« on: February 11, 2015, 01:45:14 PM »

Debating between heated grips- will need to be internally wired by dealer- total cost with labor of about $600.  Cost is ok but per my research the heated grips tend to not last long past any warranty thus requiring another install down the road...  My only issue with the heated gloves is all the required wiring involved, heat trollers, etc.  I live in S. CA so don't really need that much heat too often but then there is the occasional long trips, like Canada, where sometimes it does get chilly.   Any thoughts??  Thanks.

Well I had heated grips added to my 2013 SERK, the same ones that came stock on the SE Ultra for 13.

They work very well.  Its below 50 before I want heated gloves.

I love having heated grips can wear summer thin gloves in the 60 and hands are nice and warm.

Thanks, so I guess no problems with the heated grips yet... after a couple of years anyway.

In the past the HD heated grips were short-lived, but they seem to have gotten much better.

Heated gloves vs grips:  I prefer gloves because grips do nothing for the back of the hand, and not much for the outside of the fingers--but I ride regularly in 25 to 40 degree F conditions, where for me the gloves do better.

Thanks.  Do you use just gloves or the jacket/glove combo? Looks like gloves are easy to plug in to jacket, but glove alone and the wires not too convenient, and I doubt if I'd ever need the jacket...  at 25 degrees is a full on heated suit, IMO.

It's a meet up and ride.  The LA,  OC and San Diego folks will meet there and head over the Ortega Highway for lunch and a tour of the area.  Good chance to meet people you talk to on line.  Hope you can make it.

I have a heated jacket liner, so don't have to use the Y-harness for gloves.  The heated liner replaces the liner in my outer jacket to reduce bulk.

For the colder temps, or for long trips (changing climates), I also have heated socks.  I've found that if I keep my hands and feet warm, usually don't need to heat the liner (so the dual temp controller can run (1) the gloves, and (2) the socks).

For the really cold temps, I use a short y-harness to connect the gloves and liner together and run them on one "channel" of the temp controller, and use the other channel for the socks.  When the gloves and liner are on one channel, I've found that a comfortable liner temp usually needs more heat to the hands, so I use the heated grips in addition.  I've never needed the heated seat when I'm set up like this.

You might want to check JCZ's review of the Gerbing eXtreme Element heated jacket and pants here:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=68677.0.  They are spendy, but I think they can double as rain gear and can be worn in somewhat warmer temps.  JCZ lives in your area and rides all over, so he has the experience to rate them.  He likes them a lot, even at the price.

Having had heated grips on a couple non-Harley's and heated gloves, I would say it depends.  However, the way heated gloves are wired it's best to have both if cost is no object.  However, if I had to choose between one or the other, heated gloves win "hands down" (so to speak).

Heated grips are great for mid-level cold weather and cool nights when you might find yourself without a spare pair of warm gloves for a suddenly colder than you expected ride. They're always there and ready to go.

However, heated grips require that you keep your hands tightly wrapped around the grip for heat transfer.  Once your hand comes off the grip, your glove and hand begin to cool off and it will take a few moments for the heat to return once you put your hands back on the grip.  Not a big deal in cool temps, but when it's cold... you end up having a death grip on your grips and even then if your hands are shielded from wind blast the back of your hands/fingers will still be cool, not warm and toasty in the very cold temps.  And, if the grip stops working for any reason, you've got to fix the bike to correct the problem.

Gloves keep your hands warm no matter where they are; on the grips, resting on the tank, while flipping the bird... whatever. They heat from the back and side of the hands & fingers, not from the palm... When it's really cold having the backs of your fingers bathed in warmth is a very good thing.  If there's a problem with the gloves, its usually very easy to troubleshoot and fix during a five minute visit to any store that sells heated gear as most of the heated gear products are compatible, even if a connector adapter is needed.

I've also become a big fan of the heated glove liners from First Gear and others that offer the very minimalist liner; Gerbing's is too heavy to make the cut.  The liners are great because you can use them with just slightly oversized gloves you already own. By slightly oversized, I mean gloves that have been worn for a season or two and don't quite fit as snugly as they did when they were new. These are an ideal shell for the liners.  What I like about this is, I can have the heated liners in my saddle bag with my heated liner and wear the shells until the temps demand the heated gear.  I can also use a rain glove when I need it vs. just a nice cattleman's leather shell when it's dry or a nice Gortex glove when it's really cold for maximum warmth.  Just lots of flexibility.

Having a liner with wire leads out to the sleeve ends is the only way to go as is a dual controller.  You can start with the gloves only or the jacket only, but if you ride when it's cold and want to be comfortable -- to hell with manning up being cold -- a jacket & gloves are ideal.  For long trips in at or below freezing temps, the heated pant liners with heated insoles are also a great option.  I can go for an hour in below freezing to zero temps without the pant liners or insoles, but after that your legs become a heat sink for the rest of your body and the jacket and gloves will not keep you from shivering.

Just my .02...  after year-round commuting in temps down to Zero and a few long road trips in the 20's and 30's with my wife who also gets the top to bottom heated gear treatment.

I have had heated grip on my 2010 limited and 2011 softail and have no problems with either.  I like the heated grips over gloves just for connivence.  I carry only one light pair of glove and the heat is available anytime I want I want it.

The couple of times I wished I had headed gloves was when it was way to cold and I wished I hadn't needed to ride.

Use my heated grips almost every month of the year. They feel good at the end of a long day of riding.

Use heated gloves whenever it gets gold enough to use them.

The grips (mine are aftermarket) do a good job, but if you take your hand off they cool off rather quickly.

The grips do great except the thumbs. For some reason they don't seem to get the warmth that the rest of the hand gets. Since I live in louisiana I just keep a pair of battery operated gloves to use for the few times I ride into really cold areas.
