Transmission Shifter Seal
« on: January 08, 2007, 11:13:17 AM »

Seems the seal for the shifter shaft at the transmission is leaking.  Redline Shockproof instantly id'd the source!!
Which way does this seal come out??  Removing the inner primary or thru the  inside of the transmission?  Either answer is a win-win.  Inner Primary = New Chrome Primary,  Transmission = New 6 Speed.
Bad part: 6 months past the end of the warranty.  '05 SEEG

Tally,

It comes out the primary side (sorry, no 6 speed this time ;)).  While your in there, take a hard look at the trans mainshaft seal as well..

Since you already mentioned new Chrome Inner Primary if it comes out the primary side may as well add Automatic Primary Chain Tension Adjuster, and Chrome Starter while you are there (that is if you don't already have them). ;D

Tally-

Sorry to hear about your leak.  I would do as GRC stated and change the mainshaft seal while in there also.

You may as well do the 6 speed gear set as you are 1/2 way there with the inner and outer primary covers off.  And if you do the mainshaft seal of the tranny, you have to take that off anyway to install the 6speed gear kit.

Primary Chain Adjuster and Chrome Starter were part of the package.  MainShaft seal too??  Now you're just teasing me.  Think anyone on Ebay's interested in a lightly used, major PO'd wife??
Seriously, these seals go with just 14,000 miles?  Frak!!

Tally, you might give H-D customer service a call and see what they would do for you.  I had an FXR3 I bought used with 3,500 miles and it had a leak at the shifter shaft seal.  After two repairs dealer found I had a cracked inner primary.  Not saying that is what yours is - different engine entirely - but point is that H-D fixed under goodwill adjustment even though bike was 3 years old and only had 1 year warranty when new.  I paid a $100 the they paid rest.  Worth a try.

Tally,

Mine (both shifter and mainshaft) only survived about 10,500 miles, and I've heard/read about many more that failed.  Failures have occurred almost immediately, or after 30k miles, with no real rhyme or reason.  Looks like just one more "under-engineered" system.

BTW - after seeing how fast 'd00d jumped in with the chrome suggestions, do you wonder why we warn newbies about him?   :)

You have to admit it's going to be a savings adding the parts I suggested if he's already in there. :)

My seal went at 25,000 miles...Dont use the harley shifter seal, use a comtec seal...side by side the comtech seal is the choice... two totally different seals..its like paper next to rubber(the best discription i can think of) why harley dosent upgrade the seal ,,well I'm sure you can figure that on out !!....ride on....headpan

I was wondering if there was a better seal to use.  Should have known Comtec.  Won't let HD do the swap, there's a good independent that I'd rather give the business to.  Time to price some chrome, starter is gonna be a tough sell, but it sure would look better there.  There's a company that makes some smoothed-case starters in shiny red, blue, yellow.  Gotta research them.

Seems like this might be a case for a recall.  Recommend you get with the dealer and offer the option of a recall fight or H-D take care of the leak for you.  My shift shaft seal went out (24.6K miles) 2 months after the factory warranty ran out.  Thank goodness for the extended warranty.  Interesting so many seals are reaching the end of their useful life around 25K.    >:(
