Changing it up a bit- TTS 100 cam and exhaust
« on: August 27, 2015, 01:28:28 PM »

Kind of a long story but I had a top end rebuild 17,000 miles ago, but after having a re-tune/dyno runs by Dave Stoddart at Pocono Mtn HD, I realized my power isn't quite what I thought it was.

I also have an oil consumption problem, so my local indy mechanic suggested before I pull the cylinder heads, I should start with the small stuff first to eliminate some possible issues.. He told me to get rid of the 5 micron Wix oil filter and put on a PC Racing Flo re-usable filter, just to eliminate the oil restriction possibility. Since I'm at 47,000 miles on the original oil pump, he is going to replace the oil pump as well, as the engine may be sumping. I do get what I think is too much blow by.

Since the cam chest is open and the exhaust is off, I ordered a set of TTS 100 cams that I have been reading up on. My previous build included a valve job, head "clean up" porting, and .030 head gaskets, so I think/hope this cam will work well for what I want, which is low-mid torque increase. He will be installing this with S&S adjustable pushrods. I have Gaterman 1021 lifters from before, so I'm leaving those in.

Since the head pipe is off, I am going back to a Fullsac pipe- just ordered the DX. I used to run the "B" pipe, but went to an OEM catless ceramic coated pipe. My tuner Dave said I will gain some with the DX, and it should get along well with my 4" Rineharts according to him.

Installing the cams and headpipe costs no extra labor since my oil pump is being replaced, which if noting else is a good preventative maintenance item to replace at my mileage. At least I think so.

If the oil usage/puking persists, I will take the bike down to PA and have Dave tear open the top end to inspect the valve guides, rings, etc.

I spoke to Steve Cole on the phone when I ordered the cams and talked to him about my bike. Sounds like a good guy, extremely knowledgeable and no nonsense for sure. I also want to thank Steve at Fullsac for the forum discount on the DX pipe.

Did you see the thread on "Gaterman Failure" this last Sunday? I'd go with S&S lifters

I did. The failure was the Gaterman designed 1023. I have the 1021's, which are copies of the old B lifters.

But yes, if I do change them out at any point, I will go with the S&S.

I like the design of the Gaterman, but the materials and hardening seem sub standard.

You might take a look at the flawless Headquarters Black Ops lifters that I run. They are dead quiet and run like a top.

Focus guys, my thread is not about lifters, lol.

Hoping for some support that my plan is sound.

Besides, even if I was mad, I could never be rude to you, because 1) You seem like such a nice guy, and 2) I'd be afraid Buster would hunt me down and run me over like that old movie "Christine"  ;D

I think your on the right track. The TTS 100 cams look to be a great grind, power right in the sweet spot. The DX is also a very good choice IME. Highly doubt a re-usable filter will fix oil consumption. Any MC application filter, HD, K&N, etc. will be fine, but if you like the idea of re-usable go for it. Get your mechanic to do a leakdown test, that will alert you to a problem with ring seal.

Thanks, yes I will have him do a leakdown test.

I was also considering the GMR 577 or Kuryakyn 24D, but I don't think either will have the large torque increase that the TTS 100 will have. I hope with the headwork and the .030 gaskets, my gains should be better than average.

As far as over 4000 rpms and bragging rights for numbers, I'm not too concerned, so it would seem the TTS 100 is a good fit for me.

The problem oil carry over, blow by.
Fix the ring seal, check the guides replace seals, and check runout at the sprocket side fixing the crank if needed that may have taken out the pump.
If the pump inspection is OK it is good to reuse.

I have done a couple of bikes with the TTS 100 cams, both customers have been very happy and the instant torque you get puts a big smile on the face!

Thing is I just had new pistons/rings/cylinders, valve guides and seals 17,000 miles ago. Builder is well known around here as the best, so my mechanic (who knows him) says it's hard to believe it would be poor ring seal. He honed the cylinders himself, and did several heat cycles. Told me to stay away from full synthetics, especially Amsoil, as they have been known to run thin and sneak past the rings into the chambers.

I've also recently replaced the umbrella valves/seals.

From what I understood, sumping could also cause excessive blow by and show a low oil level because not all the oil is sitting in the oil tank?

Crank run out will be checked again but I just asked my builder what it was when he did the work, and he recalled it was much better than most at .002 or so.

A leak down test done with accurate equipment will tell the ring story. Takes all opinions out of the equation.

A sumping test, the same. If more than 6oz is retrieved after the motor hot is allowed to idle for a minute then there is something not right. One of my own bikes had 12oz and it ran very hot and dropped 10hp.

BTW check the Rineharts. If they came off their dual exhaust system they will not fit the Fullsac head pipe. If they are their slip-on mufflers sold separately good to go.
