No more American Elites
« on: February 12, 2025, 05:34:04 PM »

My dealer just said that Dunlap is discontinuing all American Elites and they will no longer be available.  I have one on the rear and am going with an Avon Cobra on the front.  They mentioned that sometimes with a mismatch tire there can be a wobble caused by mismatched tires.  Have any of you experienced this?  Also, what tires are you using and are you happy with them?

Update:  I found an American Elite for the front from another dealership that I ordered.  So all is good.   But what tires are you guys happy with? (for the future).

I heard that they were not manufacturing then in the US, but they were making them in some other country, can't remember which one?

I do have a set of Michelin's sitting in the garage and are going to give them a try again, last go around wasn't so good with the front tire, hopefully they have that straighten out.

I have also heard the American Elite is being made overseas.  Cant remember where for sure, possibly France.

The replacement with be the AE2.  Its out in some sizes now.  It is suppose to be an improvement.

I just got a dunlop AE in this week from Dennis Kirk, made in USA 2124. AE was my goto tire, I’ll try the new AE2 when the time comes.

I had some holiday cash from my dealer that I had to use up in Jan. So I order a AE back tire that came in last week. Last night I asked about ordering a front tire to match the back and was told that the AE for front in my size was gone. The system showed the new AE2 with availabity in mid March. Since I hadn't picked up the back AE yet, I think I just exchange it for the new AE2 when it becomes available.

Now that the tariffs are in place, I wonder how much the cost will be?  Are any motorcycle tires being made in the USA? I thought Dunlop was made in the USA, but from these posts I guess not.

The American Elite was made in New York.  That plant is closing.

Wow.  Are there any motorcycle tires being made here in the USA? I heard the Michelin factory in Ardmore, Oklahoma closed too. Do we have any options or do we just have to buy foreign and pay the tariffs?

New favorite word? Once that situation gets sorted out, will you find a new word to keep using? Used to be called import tax. I guess tax is a better word than a tariff.

Good point, let's just say we're paying import taxes, that makes it so much better on the pocket book.

It used to be that no one liked paying taxes (import or domestic) and that those who implemented taxes were poor decision makers who didn't know how to run a country.  But lately all that's changed.  Thankfully now days it's patriotic and American to pay more.  In fact by paying more you are doing your part to help others.  Didn't used to be that way, but it is now.  It's like the cost of groceries and eggs.  Before it was an OUTRAGE to face those prices and something HAD to be done.  But today you are a REAL American for paying those high prices. By paying those import fees you are showing your love for this country and your fellow man.

(Disclaimer: The above is pure sarcasm based on recent events. Just like 2016 when we were told that "China is paying all the tariffs" on steel, the writer understands that's NOT how tariffs work.  However, given the virtuous nationwide stance of current affairs, the writer eagerly awaits higher prices on ALL imported items including motorcycle tires.  Additionally I fully expect to be placed in a time on this site out for stating opinions and thoughts not aligned with the current quo.)

As one who lives in a neighboring country, you might well see an influx of riders coming north to buy tires and have them installed. This might save US riders on the "Import Taxes" and allow for a nice ride.  It's irony in its purest form.
