SEUC² Head Temps
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:57:54 AM »

Ok boys & girls,

I've got my Radio Shack Infrared Thermometer and took temperature readings yesterday. I will post here and encourage others to post their readings here as well.

The readings are from the rear jug and are the hottest reading shown.

Ambient Temp ~ 80º Temp 287º

The hottest reading was 350.5º after riding in the mountains.

Is that after mods were done to your exhaust etc.?

AJ,

That 287 sounds low, real low. The 350 sounds more like I would expect. For me, ideal would be about 330. Now a lot depends on where you actually take the tamp, because it makes a big difference. I started aiming right at the shiny metal you can see around the spark plug as it is easy for others to do the same. Other locations are just too hard to explain so everyone could measure the same spot.

Yes. These numbers are from my current setup: Rhinehart True Duals, PCIII, RYO A/C, heat shields installed, ~ 7k miles

Chief, I was taking them from the other side (easier side by the tags). From now on I will take them at the spark plug so we all have the same measuring spot.

Now that's funny!

If 350 was low then don't tell anybody what a 140/140 shows.
Or a 126/121.

My 07 SERK with 2-1 RH/SERT was running around 305-315 external metal temperature, at idle, in traffic, haulin butt tween lights, on the right side of the rear cylinder head just below the badge.

Ambient was around 80-85, stop and go traffic ) from 0- 60ish, flatland.

My pals 06 103( RH TruDu/SERT) rear cylinder metal temp was similar and the old 88 behind us was around 280(V&H Tru Du type).

All data presented here in a totally unscientific forum without a control subject is open to interpretation, trepidation, fabrication salutations and least I forget, fornication, as I am not sure what any of this means but it is nice ot see similar numbers on bikes like mine that have not yet melted down.

The reason I measure the temp at the spark plug base is because one of the most popular means of measuring Cylinder Head Temp, CHT, is to use a thermocouple washer that goes under the sparkplug. This spot is in the middle of the head, and with the absence of fins and stuff, will most likely give the most consistent results.

Measuring on the right side near the badge, is a VERY long way away from the combustion chamber, and subject to a lot of variation in measurements.

Chip,

If you read a bit closer, you'll see I said the 287 was low, not the 350.

Crikey! if its 310 that far away...sheesh.

The area under the spark plug is to considered to be represenatative of cylinder metal temperaure for this thread
I will get some data measured at that location and post.  By the by what temperatures did you see at that location?
What were the ambient conditions, air temp, traffic terrain, speeds?
Thanks for the guidance and maybe some things will clear up.

For me, I commonly see 340 kind of numbers. One short putt getting stuck in traffic, pushed them up to 380. That number had me a bit worried. Normally, 340 is about right. I checked a 2003 Ultra one morning when we both rode, and his front was 330, but my front was a bit cooler than that. 330 or 340 doesn't worry me. The 380 sure got my attention tho.

Where are you measuring at?  Thanks.

I was going to check on the next ride, rear cylinder, left side on the flat area of the head where the spark plug is....Last check was right side, rear cylinder under the badge are near the exhaust flange.
