No Sound From Radio
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:31:46 PM »

Hey All,
I was on my way home from a ride to Las Vegas and it was raining like crazy.  All of the sudden, I couldn't get any sound from my stereo.  The Hawg-Wired amp LED is lit so the amp is getting power.  Fuses are ok.  Radio display is showing that music is playing but I get no music to the speakers.  There is a hum coming from the speakers so I know they are on.  It appears there is no sound coming from the radio to the speakers?  Any thoughts on what this might be?

As always, appreciate any help you can give.

When that happened to me, it was the speakers/cross-overs that went bad.  replaced them and all was good in the world again.

Try disconnecting the high level input to the amp and put these leads back onto the factory speakers. This will tell you if the problem is with the HW stuff or the HK radio. If the radio plays then the problem lies either in the amp or the speakers. Look for any visual damage to the crossovers. Over many miles with the stereo cranked up they can over heat. It will be obvious if this is your problem.

Hey Ernie and Jim,

Thanks for the reply!  Just what are the "cross-overs"?  :confused5:

I was at the tale end of a 15 hour ride with the stereo loud most of the way.  This may be the problem

Mine lost the sound yesterday as well but it is the stock system not Hawg-Wired.
Sound comes through the headsets but not through the speakers.
I have an appointment for tomorrow to have my tour-pak changed for the 3rd time and just dropped of the bike.
I told the service manager about the radio and no sound and they are going to check it out tomorrow.
Bike just went out of 2 year warranty but I do have the extended warranty.
I will let you know what they find.

The crossovers are the rectangular boxes wired between the amp and the speakers.  They should be velcro'd somewhere on the inner fairing.

Thanks for the pic's Jim!  I found them but how can you tell if they are fried?  I have checked and there is power coming from them.  I am convinced it is the stereo.  The four wires coming from the back of the radio going to the input on the amp have no power coming from them.

Oh no, not the buttertart!  Some things just stick with you :bananarock:  I think I will change my name from Canuck to Buttertart!

I tested the wires from the stereo for power but I have now been informed that they would not produce a power current.  I am back to the drawing board.  I am trying to find another Harley stereo so I can hook it up and see if that is the problem.

Still working on it.

take two wires and run them from the wires you checked for current and connect them to a speaker

Must be an epidemic - Sunday my radio only worked on the right side - today it has the same symptoms as above, no sound but display is normal.

service manager just told me the new tour-pak is installed and a new radio is on the way and will be here tomorrow.
turns out the radio went bad.
played great all day sunday but when monday came had no sound out the speakers but it worked great through the headsets.
only going to cost $50 for the radio the extended warranty picks up the rest.

I tried running two wires from the radio to stock speakers and nothing!  I have summarized there is nothing wrong with the Hawg-Wired Amp and speakers.  I have removed the stereo and will bring it into Harley tomorrow.  They said they will send it off to be repaired or replaced.  That means a month with no music :(

thanks to everyone for the help and guidance in trying to resolve this problem.  As with every problem, I am now a little wiser and my "level of competancy" has grown.
