Harley Head "Enhancement" - 2008 CUSE3
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:54:57 PM »

My scooter is in the shop for the Harley head enhacement.  As I understand they are replacing the .030" head gasket with a .060" head gasket.  Isn't anyone else concerned about what this has done to your squish band and compression?

While the bike was apart I had the pistons teflon coated and ceramic doomed by Classic Coating in Sheboygan, WI.  I took the pistons back to the HD dealer.  I mentioned to him that I wanted the pistons decked to "0" and use a .030" fiber gasket.  He's going to call me when they get the pistons and jugs on to tell me what the deck height is at.  I do not want them puting in a cheap (probably muli-layered) .060" gasket.

So can any engine builders or experienced mech. tell me what they recommend for squish band?  With the stock heads on my 110 CVO and pistons decked to "0" what would be the recommend gasket thickness?  What would you recommend for a good gasket?

The tear down is at HD's expense.  I just want to maintain or improve upon the performance level the bike was designed for.  After the head replacement my scooter is heading for dyno tuning.

Thanks in advance.

The stock gaskets were never 0.030" gaskets. But I understand the new replacement HG's are thicker than the originals. And yes, this would lower the CR. I use the Cometic 0.030" on my 110 build, with decked heads, for a 9.8:1 Static CR! ;)

Without going through all you old posts. A few questions for you.  Did you modifiy your heads or did you just deck your pistons and stuff in the Cometic 0.030"?  Doc actually gave me this recommendation too.

What Cometic gasket did you use a fiber or multi-layer?

Many people on this site have done a wide variety of changes to the original 110 engine, even before the Moco came out with a "fix". I suggest you read some of the threads to familiarize yourself with the many options. Go to the "Home" screen and enter, e.g. "110" or "engine upgrade" as the search term. That should make a wealth of information accessible to you.

Ride safely,

highly modified heads done by Wes at CycleRama. It's a multi-layer Cometic 0.030" HG. Heads are decked for higher CR. Pistons are Flat Top CP Forged Pistons with Axtell 4" jugs. ;)

Decked to 0 I'm assuming?  Do you know what your squish band is?

Does anyone know what Harley 110 CVO motor squish is factory?

Wes never sent me any specs on the heads. I asked many times too. But he put the entire package together also using his CR 595 cams, and it peformed extremely well til a lifter failure. But it was an aggressive build. I'm detuning it now for longevity and reliability and using the S&S 585G cams instead. I don't know the corrected CR and am not flowing the heads to find out. I'm blindly expecting this to match up fairly well based on the previous build information and the 585 cam specs. ;)

Well ,I am no expert, BUT, I have been porting H-D heads since 1978. Anyway , the 'stock'  MLS {multi-layer steel} 3 piece, that was the second head gasket that came out in  late 07 ,was .040 thick and looked like it was made by Cometic, BUT, it wasn't.   I run Cometic .030 hg on every TC ,period !  Ideal squish for the street ,is .028 - .032 and racing gets tighter , .012 - .020  I will tell you want happens inside your motor. Had a 'stock' 2000 FLHT {88"} AND IT PINGED ,detonation. Put on .030 hg ,NO PING.   stock  hg was .052 ,pistons sat below deck .004 - .007 , so lets say .052 + .005 = .057 now ad in the fact that your motor 'stretchs' any where from .030 - .060 {cyl. grows} so now we ad .052 + .005 + .045 = .097 , YES ?   That is a HUGE pocket for air-fuel to 'hide' in. DETONATION !!!!!  The reason H-D and everybody else goes with a thick hg is , old 'FART' baby there motors and carbon will build up on the piston and can hit the head after time. Safety !  You want a tight squish band because that is what  're-atomize' your air-fuel mixture , YES ? You don't want 'big' fuel dropletts because they don't burn as well as small 'mist' fuel. Why was the EVO more powerfull than the Shovel ? Same C.I.  ? The EVO had a squish band in the heads {D-Shaped} and had squish on one side , TCs have a 'bathtub' {squish} on 2 sides .  110" have a different head that has 'squish on both sides' too ,  but more on one side that the other. They had to make a 'big' combustion chamber for the 'big' valves { 2.080 intake} and not have valve 'shrouding'. By  'milling' your heads gasket surface ,you will get more squish ,and smaller combustion chamber and a better 'burn' , YES ? Now I am tired and Gunsmoke is on. DEWEY

One more reason the EVO was faster than the Shovle,  smaller ports and valves. More velocity. Bigger is NOT always better. Stop listening to your wife ! Remember ,you can't hold whats not in your hand. Dewey

to gremlush                              my head replacements for my 110-07 ultra are in & i have ordered the 18190-08 valves  & will have  4-5 angle valve cuts done . if i have heads milled .040 is the valve to piston clearance o.k.?  i will be using the h.g. that comes in the 0905 kit.   will my low rpm torque be lower with this larger valve?  could you tell me how much head should be milled to get 9.8 c.r.  im new at this comp. stuff       hope gunsmoke isnt on now.   will be using s.e. 251 cam.

1st of all , DO NOT USE ,the STOCK REPLACEMENT HEAD GASKETS. you need squish my freind.  .028- .032 is good. Remember ,your cyl. GROW !  When you start with .055 and your pistons sit 'below' the 'deck'  .005 = .060 and the cyl. grow .040+  =.100 + thats big enough to hide a doughnut in , YES. Use the Cometic .030 hg and tq. down to Cometic specs ! 'Mill'  {flycut} .030 off of your heads , any local machine shop can do this { around $50} and that will give you 'around' 10 - 1 comp. and with the 251 cams , HANG ON  !  Enjoy your doughnut ,ahh ,I mean ride. Dewey  ps. whoever is 'cutting' your seats, {4 angle, whatever} tell them to hit the 'bottom' of your stem protusion  {1.990-2.024} so shoot for 1.990 , because you don't want to sink the valve any further than you have too. Valve stem protusion is very important. I think I just heard 'Miss Kitty'

one more thing. about clearance. The 255 cams have .079 - .070 top dead center lift on the cams, the 251s have .178 - .158 , so you should 'clay' top { put a small peice of clay in the valve pockets on your pistons and roll the motor over to see where the valve hits} just to be safe. and don't worry about low end tq. what you need to worry about ,is where to buy your 'depends' because you will need them every time you hit the throttle. LOL

Hey Gremlush, don't understand a thing you're saying. I live in Rochester. Do you know of a good dyno tuner in our area?  Have a new SERG that I will want tuned after break-in. Sounds like you know what you are talking about though. Thanks
