NOW THE BACK TIRE...(or another cupping story!)
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:35:26 PM »

SO, I originally started the front tire cupping story and it was factory replaced.  While we were at it I had them take pics of the back tire and HD said sorry we dont see any issues.  SO that was around 8500 mile mark.  Now I got close to the wear bar so I ordered and bought a new rear tire.  It lasted 14k miles and after it was changed I told my service writer to take pics and send them back to the factory.   While the center tread was normal, the farther you went outboard the worse the cupping got.
   SO I just received a call from my dealer....Harley sent an email and I am getting re-embursed for the tire and labor!  I have been following the threads on the tire issues and hope that those that did not get any action should call customer service.   BTW, they are still making D407's for the rear  And my 2 cents is that Metzler's SUCK!   no......they really SUCK!

but i phoned with a SERG owner in the morning and he said that he definitely has a D408 mounted at the rear , but i did not found one , i put on a D407 at 8k miles because of the cupping .
 The front was 800 miles before changed .
 No reaction from the company , no warranty-change here in germany .

When my front tire was replaced with a 407 (all they had in stock) at 5K, I told them the rear was cupping in the opposite direction.  They called the moco and they said they knew of NO issues with the back tires.  I said "they do now" and went on my 2K trip.

Now, the bike is in the shop for another issue (starter pinion gear/clutch w/possible ACR) and the rear wheel recall came up.  I again point out that not only is the rear tire getting worse at 7,600 miles but the 407 put on at 5K is now cupping.  The service manager said he'd take up my banner w/moco...we'll see.

sblair,

How so?  I've heard nothing but good about them.

Certainly, they can't be worse than what we have mounted now...not too many choices in 18" out there.

sblair,

please get your hands on that email from the moco
and post it in the forum. Because this is an official
statement from the moco and that's what all of us
D407ers are looking for. Especially in Europe the moco
still plays the 3 apes.

thanxs, Bandit

bandit;
  I'll see what I can do!  I'm in pretty good with the service writer so....

61bbltop;
  I put Metzler M880's on my Dyna because I heard good things about them.  For a fair weather tire it was ok, but in wet coditions it was really slippery.  The first time I had about 2000 miles on the tires and it was a heavy mist.  Just wet enough to get the bike dirty.  When I took corners ( really easy since it was wet) I felt the rear fishtail slightly (my butt puckered)  so I took it a little easier.  Took a hard left at a light and the rear really fishtailed.
  This happened a couple time over the next few weeks.  2 months later we had a ride and there was a low spot where water crossed the road.  Been across it many times on Dunlops.  It can be slippery but if you just roll nicelly through it...  Well Here I am on the Dyna and just on the other side the rear end let loose and swung to the left.  I pulled in the clutch, slammed on the front brake and did a 270 with the bike resting on the right side on the pipes.   Shortly thereafter I put Dunlops back on.

Highjagger.  it definately was a D407 I bought.

sblair,

Wow, that's too bad about the ME880 wet performance.  These 407s are like velcro in wet conditions...I tried to activate (test) my abs out here on a country flat road by grabbing the binders as hard as I could and she stopped like I hit the trap on an aircraft carrier!    And NO ABS activation!

I have felt it though when down shifting smartly and the drag of the tranny along with applying the rear brake activated it.

It's just too bad they cup.  I wonder if anyone out there with the new 408s is getting cupping?

I have about 10k on my D408 front tire now and it appears to be holding up pretty good.  There is a slight wear difference right at the points in the center tread but nothing major.  Rear is still a D407! only about 3k on it.

Just got my 09 cvo springer back with 75k and a new d408 front tire.  The front started cupping at 4k and gone by 7k. Dealer refused to replace, said rep wouldnt authorize it.  Found three other posts of bikes with problem and dealer replaced  tires, so I called Dunlop cust service from their web home page number and started a file .  They told me to take back to my dealer and have the dealer give them a call. Dealer replaced no problem.  That was a D407.  Rear tire is not cupping yet.
