Insurance for Mods
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:12:19 PM »

Has anyone here ever heard about a insurance policy that you can purchase as an extra or premium that will cover your bike if you have done any Mods on your bike?

My insurance offers the opportunity to include modifications but it really increases the costs.

I have Dairyland ins and bike is insured for an additional $5,000.00 over, for mods. You can put whatever price you are willing to pay extra for.

I have Harley Davidson insurance (Foremost).  They include $3000 in mods in the policy.  On my '03 Ultra, I upped that to $8000 and the additional cost was $12/year.

Harley Davidson insurance (Progressive) include $3000 in mods in the policy standard.

Ensure you include the following:

If you replace a part on the bike it only covers the cost of the part, if it is an added part it includes the cost of the part and the labor.

Also, remember this includes your riding gear damaged during the accident.

Leather Jacket - $400
Boots - $100
Gloves - $60
Chaps - $100
Helmet - $150

Dammit.....I thought you were going to tell us that us Mods are going to get free insurance or something. :nixweiss:

On the serious side.......two of you have posted Harley Davidson insurance (Foremost and Progressive).  I don't think Harley Davidson sells insurance.  Some dealerships have an agent (usually the salesman) that will sell you insurance but it's not Harley Davidson insurance.......the same as the extended service agreement (extended warranty) is not Harley Davidson.  They're just acting as a sales agent for the product supplier and they get a commission at the dealership for it.

I have State Farm and they cover anything I put on the bike as long as I have pictures and receipts. Case in point I hit a lady broad side on my 85 FXRS. She ran the light but I got the ticket. Anyway my insurance man said "oh and 85 we will probably total it". I took him $22k worth of receipts and they forked out $8k to rebuild it. More than blue book! I did the rebuild myself and got the parts at discount prices and saved almost $3k. I had asked my agent several times over the years and they always told me just take pictures and keep your receipts.    :bananarock: Works for me!

Yes, you are correct about Harley not actually selling insurance.  They are just a broker.  But, I've had other insurance companies insure my bike and found that "Harley" insurance is cheaper than the others, including State Farm (who insures our cars).  State Farm is NOT a motorcycle insurer so they cannot offer the same rates as those who actually insure motorcycles as part of their everyday business.  And, the "Harley" insurance is much, much cheaper when it comes to adding upgrades and custom work...

Cheaper than $400 a year for full coverage on a 2009 SERG?

Only way to find out is to check in to it.  I pay $316 for an '05 FLHTCSE2 and I was paying $302 for my '03 Ultra with $8000 worth of custom accessories.  I get a 10% discount for HOG membership.  I've checked around (State Farm, Progressive, Farmers) and I couldn't find it any cheaper.

Cheaper than $400 a year for full coverage on a 2009 SERG?

I pay just a bit over $500 for my SESG. With coverage for 5K in accessories. That includes uninsured motorist and liability limits of 100/300.
Dairyland through Harley Davidson Insurance.

I hear all these other companies making there cheaper claims. I looked at consumer reports and many have poor customer satisfaction ratings. State did also have some complaints. I have been with state farm since the age of 16 I am now 49. In 2001 I hit a lady broad side and in 2004 I got rear ended by a hit and run driver. Both times I took a chit load of receipts to state farm and got my bike fixed with no hassle and they did not raise my rate. I have had such good luck with them that I would be sacred to change. Oh did mention I have been getting dividend checks back form the insurance? Yes with 2 bikes and a truck on there policies I have received several dividend checks over the last 10 years. For me this is the best option. For others it may not be! Buyer beware that the cheapest insurance is not always the best when you need it most you will find out! Good luck everybody! :2vrolijk_21:

If you are satisfied with something, that's all that counts...
