110 motor seized valve on guide
« on: April 06, 2010, 08:42:12 PM »

Here is an example of what I have been saying. Carbon heat and oil consumption seized this valve and ripped it out of the head.

On my 110 the front cylinder exhaust valve slipped and the valve stuck and hit the intake valve.
Bent valve.
Motor stops.
Imagine that.

I didn't remember that.  When did that happen Chip?  Or is it a real recent problem?  No matter, whenever that suck, bang and blow procession is interrupted with an extra smack a guy has real problems.

Man you 110 guys are making me very happy that I have a 103.  Are these isolated incidents or is HD getting that bad at putting there products out?

Thanks and good luck.

I know (sort of) vaguely remember that happening Chip.  Still hate you had such a failure.  Would be so nice if we could just ride the beasties and didn't have to think too much.  Hell, that'd be guy-nirvana.

And like that one Chip this was a program updated head. They were supposed to have fixed those issues. Nope they missed again. They fit the valves loose in  the guide and added press fit. Now even the good seals they use (the black ones) wear out quick and the oil is traveling down the guide again just like the 07s they were trying to fix.

Not isolated, at least how I define isolated.  There have been lots of reports from nearly day one of the CVO110's concerning lousy guide press fits, and there were enough problems with guides dropping that the MoCo came out with a retaining ring design as part of the engine upgrade package back in '08.  That in itself told me something, since they wouldn't have had a problem if they just machined the heads and guides properly to begin with.  The ring was a bandaid to cover up crappy machining and press fit, combined with poor valve to guide fit and lousy stem seals.  And it appears that they are relying strictly on the bandaid instead of fixing the real problems.  Don't fix the real problem, just cover it up long enough to get out of warranty.  Same thing I think about the rest of that "upgrade" program.

It has a simple fix but not with the materials the MOCO typically uses. The added press fit is not a solution, the press they used originally was fine. The valve seizes and then pulls the guide out, all the press you can muster and something has to give when it seizes. The guide pulled in half here showing there was enough press. If I want to get that guide off the valve it will take force, it is really stuck! Then the MOCO puts the snap rings on. No net improvement whatsoever. A guide would pull those bad boys right off when the valve seizes or as it did in this case just rip in half. The added clearance....OMG this causes any seal even these good ones to leak. Then the heat then they seize.
The solution Manganese Bronze guides with a reasonable tight fit and good seals. Simple as that. The lubricity and toughness of the alloy lives in this environment. Lowering the heat level helps too.

Hey Don - I think Chip's 09 had around 20k on the clock when he experienced his failure. What year and mileage are you dealing with here?

Thanks,

I had the seals go bad in my heads on my 07 twice. The second time the valve on the rear cylinder stuck open. My heads were worked by Dan Baisley, he had to pound it out with a hammer. I hand carried them to him so I watched him pop it out with the hammer. The good news is he fixed them back up and cleaned them up no charge both times. Last time I had the motor put back together and replaced it with a Jim's 131. Now if the primary stuff will hold together I might get through this season just riding and smiling.

Jerry,

I here you and am listening, what a shame mother HD has gone back to building crap like when they were owned by AMC.  I had a few of the AMC bikes and man did I have issues.  Well for now I guess I will stick with the 06 103 and if the motor goes get a Jim's or a Patrick.  Sure would like to buy a new one again someday.  Perhaps they will get it right some day.

Thanks,

Jim
