Top end tick when hot
« on: July 10, 2010, 10:23:39 AM »

I have had my 2010 SESG for a couple of month's.
Factory... the top end had allot of ticking...like a loud sewing machine, the bike ran really bad  stock! it coughed...and sneezed.
Now with the help of Steve George at fullsac performance, I have added the Fullsac X pipe, Andrews 54 cams, Cometic .030 head gasket, Vance and Hines monster rounds the TSS tuner and a Map thanks to Steve. The bike runs awesome!
Now the problem...The sewing machine clatter is gone BUT now I have a tic...tic...tic that changes with the RPM's Only when it warms up, seems to be comming from between the top of the rocker boxes if not from the rear cyl. more? Any ideas? :-\

Check the lifters

if adjustable pushrods were used I would check to be sure they are tight as they should be.   The locknut can come loose.

Check the rocker box to be sure nothing is broke.

Start by checking the easy stuff first.  Check for leaks at the exhaust ports; an exhaust leak can sound just like a mechanical tick and will definitely vary with rpm.  Same applies to a compression leak at the head gasket.

As noted by Unbalanced, if you used adjustable pushrods, recheck the adjustment and the security of the locknuts.

Harley's lifters haven't done real well on the 110 engines.  Maybe old and tired tooling, maybe not designed to deal with the heavier valve springs in the 110 heads, who really knows, but many folks have in fact had problems with lifters.

Yup, I've been hearing the same thing.  I've also heard that some of the other aftermarket lifters, like certain Fueling parts, are actually noisier than the stock parts.  I'm not sure what's going on in the lifter business these days, but obviously there is a disconnect between what we need and what some folks are selling.  Cheap Chinese crap, perhaps? :confused5:

It wasn't all that long ago that plenty of engine builders recommended the stock lifters in most street builds, and the highly advertised aftermarket stuff wasn't really needed.  Something obviously has changed.

You think the "-B" is a good move?
I used to advice folks to use them.

I think the date of change can be traced back to the 2007 model year.

SBB, has had good luck with S & S high performance tappets with travel limiters. Might want to ask him if he still likes them.

Did you bring the bike back to the dealer or are you you going to? opposed of you going down that bunny trail to find the fix?
