SESG and Woods TW8-6 Cam
« on: January 23, 2011, 07:56:41 AM »

My builder is recommending the Woods TW8-6 cam. I'm doing the cam, pistons' heads, etc.  I'm running D&D 2:1 fat cats with the performance wrapped baffle.  I'm a solo rider that rides locally but also overnight touring.

The Woods site describes this cam as 'Best bar hopping, high performance cam available. Aggressive ramps.' I like torque and acceleration but don't want to detract from my touring.

Didn't find anyone on the site running this cam on a touring bike. Also, did read elsewhere that this cam can be noisy. On that front, I'm running the D&D, so my noise tolerance is probably higher than most.

My builder says I'll love it in the 2200-3500 rpm range, where I spend a lot of time. There when I want it, not a problem when I don't.

Looking for feedback on the cam choice.

Thanks.

This cam needs compression....  10.7  - 10.8    More compression than I would be comfortable with - expecially when touring.

Thanks for the reply. I'm told our target is 10-10.25:1 compression, and, at that level, engine won't be overstressed.

If you bump your compression to 10.35, then a Wood 555 would be a great choice.
Optimum squeeze for that cam is 10.5.

Talked to my builder. We're going to go with it. Thanks for the input.

No stressing the powerplant, by setting the proper compression to the cam.
If you set it at 10, or so, it'll be very lazy off the bottom.
Trust me on this, as we have worked with Bob Wood cams almost exclusively now for almost 15 years, and have sold/installed more Wood cams than ANY other shop in the country. Fact.
Hope this helps. :)

Bob

I'd say that the two Scotts have spoken.

Failed to post a compression update. We're going for a true 10.5 to 1. I continue to learn at every turn. I'm writing the engine mod chapter of my experience.

Between the 2 Scotts above if they can't fix it and make horsepower no one can.

And that is respect!
