Annoy and embarrassing rear cylinder chirping, hard to solve.
« on: February 22, 2011, 10:01:02 AM »

This is a challenge problem; I had used all my mechanic knowledge without success and at this point I need HELP!
I live in Chile and the experience in this model is limited.

Bike:
2008 Screaming Eagle CVO Road King.
12,000 miles

The problem:
A loud chirp in the top end of the rear cylinder, when the engine gets warm, louder at low RPM's. At high RPM, it disappears (around 1500 RPMs).  Returns immediately when the RPM's go down.  Chirp is at same rate as the valve.

What I know:
No chirp at the start when the engine is coold.
The compression is 180 psi equal in both cylinders and there is no major change with an increase in engine temperature.
Cylinder and pistons don't have unusual wear or scratches.
The spark plugs look perfect without oil and with the right color (light brown).
No leaks in the gasket heads.
No leaks in the exhaust.
No leaks in the intake.
The oil looks clean, the magnetic drain plug looks normal.
No scratch caused by the spring in the rocker housing.
No other scratch in the rocker housing.
The valves appear in good condition, without damage or unusual wear.
Good oil pressure at low rpm and good amount of oil in the top end.
No problem with the breather.
No scratches in the push rod.
Using a stethoscope, the loudest noise is in the top end near to the exhaust valve.
In the road the engine runs great, good power very agile.
It is embarrassing the chirp (beardy noise) in the stop red lights.

What I has done so far:
Replace the complete rocker arm assembly.
Replace the solenoid auto compression release.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Just a gut feeling but have you tried a good Carbon Cleaner in your Motor? Bad Gas can cause an abundance of Carbon Build-Up in the Top of the Cylinders. I would give it a try and see how it runs after that.

This may seem crazy after all the diagnosis you've done, but have you checked all the chrome covers you have on the bike. A loose cover can cause the kind of sound your describing and it can even give the impression its coming from inside the engine when in reality it's not. Start by checking the brackets and clamps that attach the chrome exhaust cover to the exhaust pipe. These are notorious for making the kind of noise you're describing. Check to make sure none of the brackets are broken and that the bolts into the bracket are tight and that the pipe clamps that fasten the chrome cover to the exhaust are also tight and not broken. I would also check any other chrome covers you have had installed on the bike. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions,
When I inspected the pistons and cylinders I cleaned all the carbon… and the problem persist.
I checked any possible lose part that could cause this chirp.

Another thing to check is the grommets on the rear bags support for being dry and dusty. That always causes a loud chirping sound. I just shoot some WD-40 on the grommets and away goes the loud chirp.

Agree, sad to say that I already dismount the bags. Thanks again.

Is it not the heat management ?

Read this thread : http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=26219.0

and others with "search" for "heat management"

The heat management shut down the rear cylinder and the engine start running a rough idle. My bike has a smooth idle. @ 850 rpm.

The bike has the factory alarm; it makes one or two chirp as announcement

Thanks!

noise's can be deceiving. try a little lube on the top engine mount and believe it or not check rear belt for dryness and adjustment. let us know when you find it.  axil

Also, when you replaced the rockers and inspected the valves, did you actually remove the valves and closely inspect the guides and stems?  More than a few 110 engines had rear exhaust valve guide failures due to the high temps plus p-poor design and machining/fit issues.  When carried to the extreme, the valve stems seized in the guides.

Make sense that should be the logical next step. I’ll check the lifters, despite I can not hear a bad sound from there, but the noise is tricky in the bikes.
Thanks.

I agree about the valve guide, it looks fine to me and I added some assemble grease when I mounted, I’ll say no major improvement but I’m suspicious about the guides. I was thinking replace it for a bronze ones, as in the old days, but I don’t know if some one provide bronze guides for the CVO heads.
Good advise thanks

When my lifters failed, it sounded more like top-end versus in the cam chest.. but my failure was up front... though 3 of 4 were bad.

Be prepared though... if the lifters are bad, the cams are probably done too...
