Serious torque.

As far as Page 46: Jims 131 Crate Motor.. take a BIG red marker and draw an X through the page,, or better yet, tear the page out of the magazine and trash it... If you want pure troubles then buy that motor...  And if you have and doubts then simply Google Jims 131 reviews and take what you read to be 100% fact and truth..   >:(

Is that being recorded/advertised via the crankshaft, or rear wheel?

Greg,,,, I normally don't believe 'everything' I read but when I persoanaly experienced every negative thing being said about the Jims 131 motor then I can comfortably make the statement I did. My horror story with the Jims 131 probably tops all. Before I purchased my 131 motor from Jims I read some of those stories but I didn't believe them, and i purchased one anyway. And now after 3000 miles on that motor it sits in a shipping crate in the corner of my garage collecting dust because it's the piece of junk everyone spoke about... I sure wished I would have believed all those negative stories.... :nixweiss:

All the charts in the SE catalogs are rear wheel chassis dyno numbers.

My only comment on "Race Motors" is they usually are just that. In the old days a Honda race motor was prepped just "right" when just past the finish line it was a piece of junk. They were built and tuned to run 1 race at the max and not a lap more. Pop's Yoshimora built his stuff the same way. Expecting a "Race Motor" to go 100,000 miles is wishful thinking. Kinda like wanting a Newbie Dresser Dude with a 11:1 compression build to pull a trailer and wife in 100 degree temps on vacation and not ping or overheat. Not standing up for the Jim's 131" or any other motor just stating my opinion. Sorry you got a piece of junk sitting around.

There is no reason at all the Jims motors should not attain 100,000 miles just as the stock motor. In actuality the 131 is a well mannered 10:1 motor. The problem lies with their lower end and their shoddy workmanship and this is bassed on MY past experience with them. Like todays Harley motors, they use pressed cranks, not a good mix with a motor putting out 150 ft/lb. of troque. Hell, a dyno run would tear em up. Put that motor in a heavy touring bike then you really have trouble.  There are a lot of other big block 'race engines' out there that offer a ton more reliability then Jim's.. So choose wisely and simply (IMO) stay away from Jims. Jims is the only motor i know of that use proprietary bolt patterns on their engine blocks for their studs. This means you are stuck with their cases, barrels, heads and even gaskets.. Basically, if you buy a Jims Race engine, you are are stuck with Jims 'junker' for life.. IMO, the Oraca's will run circles around a Jims in every way.. and their parts 'mix'   :2vrolijk_21:

I have a 131 in my bagger and I must admit I am on the second round.. I have about 8k miles this time and so far running very good. Made a trip to glacier, Beartooth pass, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole. Ran several days in 100 degree temps also, hope it stays this way. Oil temps for the most part about 225-230, not over 245 at 100 degrees and running against the wind. I like the extra power for 2-up and loaded. I also had the wheels welded when I ordered it so I wouldn't worry about that. There has been a lot of people have had issues with the 131 but alot of people had issues with thier CVO'S but that doesn't make em all junk. I just hope my straw is longer this time.

I have just over 36,000 miles on my 131 in my ’09 FLHX, and I’m having a ball with it. I’ve put 15k of those on it this summer. I get 40 mpg on the road, and it uses about a quart of oil in 4,000 miles.

As far as issues, I replaced the original lifters at 300 miles (noisy) and just to be safe, I freshen them every 12,000 miles. I did have a little oil weepage on the rear rocker cover at around 20k.

What is the definition of "freshen?"
Is that replacement or what?

I replace them. My concern is with the load that the tappet rollers are subjected to with the aggressive valve trains, over the long haul. When one of those bad boys soils the nest, it can be a pretty big deal.

Thank you!
I'm on a 15K mile replacement program also.
Better safe than sorry.
