Bike is at Asheville HD. Should they fix it???
« on: September 29, 2012, 07:21:59 PM »

During the recent Maggie Valley GTG, my brother-in-law Joe took on the Blue Ridge Parkway and lost. His 2012 SEUC is now at Asheville HD in Asheville NC awaiting the insurance company's decision on the damage estimate. If they don't total the bike and authorize repair of the bike, not having any experience with this dealer, he is not sure what to do.

Has anyone here had any experience with their service department?

He lives in New York City and the insurer, of course, will not ship the bike there.

Thanks
Tom P.

Just a question.....if they were to fix it, how would he get the bike back home??  If he is thinking of having the bike shipped home after the repair at his expense, would it make a difference if they were to ship it in it's current condition or repaired? If the answer was that he is shipping it home--then ship it now and have it fixed locally where you can monitor progress and have experience with the local dealer.

If he was going to ride it home after the repair--then just forget everything I just said and continue looking for someone with experience with that dealer.....

Following on what Mike said; would feel much less worried turning an already damaged bike over to some unknown hauler then I would having a truck driver who's always in a hurry hauling a freshly pristine bike.  Plus if there is any question on the repairs it's a hell of a lot easier to deal with and hope for re-work from someone local than it is someone several states away.

Totally agree.  When my MC was totaled 300 miles away, the dealer there gave me an estimate.  I was entitled to a second opinion so I questioned the quote from that dealer and requested that it be brought back to my local Harley dealer.  The insurance company coughed up the shipping fee to get it back here to my local dealer.  That was 1 year and 4 months ago...., it is still sitting at my dealers totaled and I have never been reimbursed for the MC yet.., :-\. But, that is another story.   :(

The hold up is that I carried a rider on my insurance that covered my 10K in after market parts and my insurance company claims that since my MC was totaled they only have to pay me book value.   :'(. I had to lawyer up and now we go to court in Feb.

I like how the INSURANCE COMPANIES make their own rules as they go along. Kinda reminds me of the IRS!!!!!! Good luck!!!!

Not all....they do seem to have different approaches to how they treat claims.  We just have to praise the good experiences and condemn the bad ones.  It's our best way to combat the unfair ones.  spyder

Insurance company was American Family.  What really sucks is that I've been making payments on a MC that is totaled  >:(.  It will be paid off one month before we go to trial.  When my agent sold me the policy she said "I sell this to all my Harley Riders because of their OEM parts".  My declaration page on my policy never states that a totaled MC voids my Rider contract.  They will lose this case, but they sure have made my life miserable for 1 1/2 yrs.  but when this is over with, I will have made their life miserable.   :P

Funny you should say that, because that's exactly what I have been telling myself but it has been a squeeze financially since this past June when I lost my career job due to the medical problems I suffered from the accident.

Remember to make sure they pay you for value at the time of the crash and not a year and a half later.....

You will prevail....   :drink:

That wasn't my experience with Allstate.  They paid me on three different accidents and as far as I was concerened, there wasn't a better motorcycle insurance.  Pay out was never a question or an argument and they paid very fast....the bike, aftermarket and clothing, etc.

Tom, first off how is Joe and did the Road King make it home after those issues?  Second, there is no way this bike is nothing but a total loss.  I had the opportunity to see it Friday night at the hotel (along with lots of others) and after a good inspection, it's got to be a total.  There is frame damage along with just about everything else damaged/scratched/destroyed.  Couldn't see but from the fluid other than the oil cooler damage, the block may be cracked and if that's the case, the primary and transmittion housing needs to be addressed.  I know you know all that but I listed it as a reminder that this bike is a total loss.  It will cost more to fix it in parts alone much less the labor.  Any good, honest dealer OR honest claims adjuster should be able to see that.  As for Ashville HD, have visited a few times (great experience each time) and had a buddy that lived there for a bit and used them for service with no issues he ever mentioned.  Still, suggest to Joe that he get "real serious" with the insurance provider and "suggest" that they bring the bike home for a second estimate.  If he has any good standing with his insurance provider, they should transport it.  If not, he should ship it on his dime and keep all the receipts for the court.  As you read in CVOgirls post, it may take a while to get results but if you have all the documentation to prove your case, it's a winning effort as it will be for CVOgirl.  Insurance companies have deep pockets and know you don't.  Court should not be a solution to our problems but sometimes you have to go that far for satisfaction and justice.  Good luck and keep us posted on what Joe decides.  You are a good brother in law... :2vrolijk_21:
