Daymaker Brights and Running Lights
« on: September 30, 2013, 11:14:19 PM »

Hi All:

I have searched through the posts and haven't been able to find anything on this topic, though I swear I read somewhere that someone took their bike in and the dealer set it so the running lights would stay on when the brights were turned on.

Low beams are great with the running lights, but when switching to brights, I lose a lot of "close-in" vision when the running lights shut off.

Anyone heard of this mod?

Regards,

Mark

There is a jumper harness that can be installed to keep the spots on with the headlight in high beam.  That's if the bike is 2013 or previous.  If it's a 2014 the function is enabled via digital technician at the dealership.

Don,

Is that jumper harness a part from HD, or is it from an aftermarket company?  Do you know a P/N?

Thank you, sir!

Dealer adjustment via the ECM.  I see you have a BIG red 14 CVO...lol  I had it done to my bike before delivery but the problem I have found is the driving lights are pointed almost straight down to the ground and don't give much distance projection and then when you hit the high beam the driving lights stay on but the low beam goes out.  Sure would be nice if they all stayed on as the LEDs take a lot less juice to run so shouldn't blow a fuse.

The main problem I have is that when I hit the brights, they really reach out, but with the running light going off, I lose some close in vision.  Good to know I can get the dealer to take care of it.

Also, I noticed you appear to be on BIG fella.  I'm 5'11" and can't flat foot on the CVO!   ;)

Nice ride, huh?

I had the same experience. The new daymaker headlight does not have enough side and close-up light when in the twisties. Without the driving lights and / or with the high beam on you loose all of your close-up and side light when in corners. The light projects a very wide flat beam and it cuts off the sides of the road  when tipping into corners, I took my 14 -CVO limited the bike back to the dealer and they charged me $50 to reprogram the ECM to allow the driving lights to stay on with the high beams. This fixed the problem and I see great now.

On the 2014 bikes yes.  It's done through digital technician.  Mentioned in the 2014 MY tech bulletin.

Yup, it's one of the nice things about CAN bus and "smart" electrical modules.  The auto industry has had this stuff for more than a decade now.

Anyone with a Digital Tech can access the setup menu's in the BCM, navigate to the lighting section, and enable or disable various optional functions.  For instance, there is a small extra light in the headlights of certain export models to meet regulations in certain countries.  Rather than have to run new wires or have a separate harness for the HDI models, with CAN bus (HDLAN) Harley just turns in on in the software for models that require it and leave it off for those that don't require it.  The same is now true with the "spots on with high beam" feature that used to take a separate wire harness or wiring mods to enable before.

Unfortunately if you have to pay a dealer $50 to take two minutes to hook up his scan tool and change the setting, that's quite a bit more expensive than just adding a $15 jumper harness like on the older bikes.

I want to adjust the driving lights up but there is a wire coming out of th middle of the bolt and I can't get a socket on it.  Anyone know the trick to get that accomplished?

The recommended tool is something called a flare nut socket.  Pictured below.

The specialty socket is much more expensive than the alternative though.  Just some cheap deep thin walled socket that you take a Dremel or die grinder too and cut a notch out of  :2vrolijk_21: .

Why would there be a wire running through a headlight adjustment screw? Has the whole mounting ring with adjustment built in been replaced? All my bikes have been adjustable with an allen wrench, can't imagine why that simple system had to be changed.
