Going down in displacement is absolutely no guarantee of better fuel economy.  Go back a dozen years or so and you'll find that the typical TC88 didn't get as many mpg's as todays CVO110's.  Fuel economy is more about things like cam timing and tuning than it is about cubic inches, at least under normal riding conditions.  If your 110 is getting lousy mileage, perhaps you have a lousy tune.  Or perhaps you're riding it like you stole it and the troopers are hot on your tail. ;D

Btw, don't forget that your late model bike is a lot heavier than those bikes from a dozen years ago also.  A smaller engine in a heavier bike isn't necessarily going to make you happy on more than one front.

He's right.  ;)
On my recent trip 2828 miles on fill ups my 110 took the same fuel as m buddies stock 96. Both are stock except for pipe and tune. We did ride the same speed and route on the trip.

My riding buddy has a mostly stock 103 (air cleaner and pipes) 2005 SEEG and I have an 07 SEUC with a 120r. We've taken many, many 4000-6000+ mile trips together, both two up, both pulling a trailer.  Mostly riding in the Rocky Mountains.  We typically get the same mileage to the tenth of a gallon, and occasionally my mileage is slightly better.  Rarely is his mileage better than mine.  Mileage varies depending on our speed, altitude and such.  We average between 36 and 42 mpg, but always the same.

That is really very interesting. I would have assumed the a smaller engine would get better mileage. Thanks for the info. I'm going to find a quality shop bore my cylinders to accommodate the 113' pistons. I will most likely wait until winter is in full swing since there is still plenty of good riding weather.

Has anyone checked out Star Racing? They have a 113" Thrasher rebuild kit? If I'm not mistaken, I believe they replace all or most of the weak links.

This is what's included and the price. I believe they're located in GA.

I was looking on their website for the details while you were adding your second post with those details.  I don't see anything that says they upgraded the crankshaft (flywheel assy), so I'd say they missed one of the very big "weak links" of the late model Twin Cam engines.  Adding 51 horsepower isn't likely to make a stock crankshaft happy, and installing gear drive cams with a stock crankshaft is fools play thanks to the pinion shaft runout common to those late model engines.  At the very least I'd want to send the crank out to someone like Darkhorse for a complete treatment (rods and bearings, alignment, plugging and/or welding, balancing).  Putting a million dollar house on a ten dollar foundation isn't very bright, and neither is producing over 140 hp using gear drive cams with a stock Harley lower end.

I never thought of it that way but it makes a lot of sense what you say. I'm trying to decide if I want to go through the hassles even with warranty that other are having. I haven't experienced them yet at 10kmiles or if I want to jump ship and do what "05train" did with the K1600. Looking at what this company offers was thinking if it starts to just upgrade but being how you put it maybe not.

Exactly the first issue I saw. Gear driven cams on a stock 110 Crank? BWAHAHAHA

People can claim anything they want in advertising these days.  When was the last time you saw the government bust anyone for false or misleading advertising?

Hey Lever

What cylinders, pistons and rings did you use.

Jerry is right. I remember doing all the work on my 110 in early 07 only to be wondering if the crank was going to hold up. At the time they wanted another 1500 and I thought should be less as they already have the motor down to just the cases. Hind sight says should have bit the bullet and done it back then.
