while the HD runout spec is 0.012", I wouldn't run it past 0.005".  If you 0.005" or worse then time to for bottom end work and best to catch it early IMHO

Well I hate to tell ya but that covers the majority of stock Harley engines. Mine is at .00625 and most builders I have talked with say it's rare to catch them under .005. Just some food for thought. Harley says .012 is acceptable, I say LOL. I have no intention of spending $1500 on the bottom end just because it "MAY" fail. Especially when I'm in the majority.  :nixweiss:

All of my 110's and my 120 were .002 or less runout.  And all the 110's I've been in, I've never seen one over .0035.  Maybe just dumb luck...   :nixweiss:

I can say the 2015 CVO 110 Showerhead we used for testing had 0.0028", The 2015 HO 103 had 0.0050". Our in house 2014 103 Showerhead 0.0092", 2013 Dyna 0.0043", 2011 RG 103 0.0040". I forget the other in house bikes but needless to say they are all over the road map and I tested all of them with less than 1000 miles on all of them. I think it is just the luck of the draw as any I have retested do not seem to have change any over time.

I'd say you are lucky. Like Steve said, they are all over the place. The last shop I was at said it was rare for him to see one under .003 and most were .005 to .009!

The more important thing I found (at least to me) was that I had no premature wear on the cam plate due to runout at 13k. So I have no plans to "fix" my runout.

The ones I've had (3 of them) were all .004 or less. Must be the influence of knowing you. Or knowing Jim, hd-dude.
Either way it's not anything I'm worried about.

Well I certainly hope so. You know what I bought a few weeks ago, hopefully your luck works for both of us.

I have to agree with measuring your run out while you are in there.  Just about every person on this topic has had theirs measured and they know exactly where they stand.  Once you have your info you can check it whenever you do a cam chest inspection to see if it is increasing.  Mine was .045 new and after 59,000 on that motor it still measured the same.  Very little wear on the cams for the mileage.  Maybe I was just lucky as well, but I would prefer it to able to install a gear drive system.  If you are close to being out of spec (.012) you may want to take it easy and make it last or have the wheels attended to.  No doubt an area of concern with many opinions on the subject.

Ray don't you have to be at. 001 or less for gear driven cams? I would be shocked to see a stock 110 with a thou or less.

This thread seems to have gotten hijacked to crank runout but while we're on the subject what tool do you use to get a reading to within .0000? One post above even had a reading of .00625 (.00000). That is incredible and the instrument must cost a fortune. The Jims Tool I use is only accurate and reads to within .001

You can measure tenths with a high quality dial indicator not a travel indicator. Not a hundredth of a thousandth. That is fantasy. :nixweiss:

Guys thank you for the great info . With only 24000 miles I don't need to worry about the reliability of a $35000 bike. I traded it in on a 2015 Street Glide   see ya on the road     just not on a cvo
